Frequently asked questions
- 01Functional medicine is a biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness. We look at the "why" behind your symptoms by analyzing your unique genetics, environment, and lifestyle.
- 02Absolutely Not ! We encourage you not to make any changes to your current medical care or prescriptions without your medical doctor's approval. We believe in collaborative care. We work alongside your existing healthcare providers to ensure you are receiving the best care possible. We'll communicate with your other doctors as needed to coordinate your functional health care.
- 03To provide the highest level of personalized care and spend the necessary time investigating your health, we do not bill insurance companies directly. However, we can provide you with a superbill that you may submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA payments. services.
- 04Chronic conditions don't develop overnight, and healing takes time. While some patients feel better within weeks of starting their Personalized Protocols, a typical journey toward lasting physiological change usually spans 3 to 6 months.
- 05We specialize supporting conditions that haven't responded well to conventional treatment, including: autoimmune issues, thyroid disorders, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, brain fog, weight resistance, and more.
- 06After your free discovery call we will send you a detailed intake form to complete. Your initial consultation appointment is comprehensive — typically 60-90 minutes. We'll review your complete health history, discuss your symptoms and goals, and determine what testing might be helpful. You'll leave with a clear understanding of our approach and next steps.
- 07Lab costs vary depending on the complexity of your case. We prioritize the most impactful tests first to remain cost-effective. During your consultation, Dr. Ghiraldi will discuss which tests are essential and provide transparent pricing before any orders are placed.
- 08While conventional medicine is excellent for acute care and emergencies, it often relies on "Band-Aid" solutions for chronic issues. At Functional HealthMed, we spend significantly more time with you (60–90 minutes for initials) and use advanced testing to look for imbalances that standard labs often miss.
- 09"Supplements are used as 'biochemical levers' to help restore balance, but they are not intended to be permanent crutches. Our primary goal is to use targeted nutrition and lifestyle changes to support your health. Any supplement protocol we recommend is personalized, evidence-based, and designed to be phased out as your body regains its natural function."
- 10"Absolutely. Functional Medicine is a complementary approach. We are happy to collaborate with your endocrinologist, cardiologist, or primary care physician to ensure you receive well-rounded, cohesive care. We can even provide notes or lab findings for you to share with your medical team."
- 11"This is where we excel. Conventional labs often use wide 'reference ranges' based on the average population (who may not be healthy). We look at functional ranges, which are narrower and represent optimal health. Even if you've been told your labs are 'normal,' we often find sub-clinical imbalances that explain why you still don't feel well."
- 12"Yes. Because Functional Medicine is based on individual physiology, it is safe and effective for all ages. Whether addressing developmental concerns in children or optimizing vitality and cognitive health in seniors, we tailor the intensity and type of intervention to the specific needs of the patient."
